Obviously, the winches should be grease to lessen wear. As well, the rear winches apparently have a tendency to loosen from their mounts over time.
Halyard Winch
Halyard winch is held together not by the single top mounted flat-head screw, but by a C-clip that the screw and cap cover. Five nuts inside the cabin hold the winch in place.
To service the winch:
Remove the top screw and cap.
Carefully place a length of duct tape on the C-clip to prevent it from flying away.
Gently pry the C-clip off with a small flat head screw driver.
Slide winch elements off shaft together- careful not to lose an internal washer.
Apply grease to all wearable parts, washers, and bottom teflon bearing plates.
Rear Winches
Rear winches are held together by a single top flat-head screw.
Port side winch is held to the mount by 4 flat head counter-sunk screws.
Starboard side winch is held to the mount by 1 counter sunk flat head screws and 3 counter sunk socket head cap screws (Allen wrench screws).
To service the rear winches:
Carefully remove the top screw.
Slide all elements of the winch off the shaft and bring together inside the cockpit.
Once safe, separate the elements and apply grease to all wearable parts, washers, and bottom teflon bearing plates.
Check that shaft mounting screws are properly tightened.
